It seems that the traditional wedding chauffeur in tails and cap may be a thing of the past. According to classic car hire specialist Great Escape a combination of belt tightening and proposed Government legislation is behind a surge in demand for self drive wedding car hire.
Great Escape, which has the largest fleet of self drive wedding cars in the UK, has seen demand for its cars double in the last year, so much so that it no longer offers chauffeur hire as an option. Some couples are now booking up 2 years in advance in order to secure dates on their preferred self drive classic car. It’s the same story with the company’s competitors in the self drive market.
Self drive classic car hire is growing at the expense of chauffeur hire it seems because of cost and the Government’s plan to remove the loophole that excludes wedding cars from normal taxi hire licencing. This legislation, due to come into force in November 2013, is expected to remove many chauffeur driven cars from the wedding hire market because of the prohibitive cost of compliance. Compared to a typical £300 charge for a chauffeur driven wedding car, self drive hire starts at less than £100 and usually includes a full 24 hours use, rather than just four or five hours.
Wedding couples are also attracted by the flexibility, added ‘fun factor’ and the wide choice of cars available with self drive classic car hire. The lower costs and longer hire periods mean that couples have more flexibility when incorporating the car into their wedding schedule, with more time for photography and trips to and from the venues. They also get the chance to drive a huge range of unusual classic cars that are not otherwise available through chauffeur hire, including Jaguar E Types, Aston Martins and even DeLorean cars.
“Self drive wedding car hire offers couples a lot of advantages over chauffeur driven hire,” explains Graham Eason of Great Escape. “It’s cheaper, more flexible and more fun, plus you have the advantage of travelling in the car with someone you’ve chosen to drive the car, which is much more relaxing.
“We have expanded our fleet of self drive wedding cars because of demand. Whether you’re looking for something vintage and quirky like a Morris Minor or retro and stylish like a DeLorean, there is a self drive classic wedding car out there for you.”
Great Escape operates a fleet of over 80 self drive wedding cars in the UK, ranging from Morris Minors to Aston Martins. The cars can be collected from 11 convenient sites around the country or Great Escape offers a nationwide delivery service.
Great Escape Classic Car Hire was founded in 2006 and is the UK’s largest classic car hire. Standard self drive hire for other Great Escape cars start at just £95/day.
